well, I am not sure what I did, but it seems that the scroll areas are now 
reading desired information to me. 3 torrents and all complete (and seeding). 
all I need to do is start sharing VINUX (Linux free OS for the blind) and I am 
all set.

perhaps part of my confusion is the layout of the client. btw, DO NOT try 
transmission bittorrent client for OS X. the client starts with no windows and 
its menu is completely inaccessible. definitely will not work with voiceover.

another that will work with voiceover is an ncurses based (command line) called 
rtorrent/libtorrent. you will have to install macports to get this client. it 
works reasonably well, but can be a tad difficult to deal with using voiceover. 
you will need to interact with the scroll area in the terminal in text mode. 
reorient is useful for those cases where you don't want the complexity of a GUI.
