I use the mobile site also
m.facebook.com
and it filters out a lot of the more annoying ads, game messages, and so on,
which make the main site so overwhelming.
My only piece of advice would be to start with a few friends or fan pages
and then add more as you get used to it.

it always redirects me to the main site.
Will the Facebook people do something about it if I write to them?
Other mobile sites are working perfectly on my Mac.
