To answer your question though, if you have an iPhone 4 then you can get an Apple adapter that lets you convert the 30 pin doc connector into hdmi. For older devices you can get third party component out adapters which should do what you want, but Apple are quite picky about what will work and what doesn't. I have a belkin one for my 3GS which I've only ever used once actually and it seemed to work well enough. I'm not sure what the 3GS outputs at, but I'm guessing it wouldn't look amazing on a large screen - my iPad 2 does upto 720P, compared to DVD's which are only 480.
