Well maybe this is a guide by an idiot so it may suffice. I am a fairly new Mac user but one of the most difficult and unintuitive programs so far is ITunes. Luckily for me all my important needs are met by the much sleeker and intuitive free VLC media player. This has the bonus of inbuilt support for filetypes not native to the mac like wma and wmv files. First off all assemble the mp3 files you want in a playlist in a folder in Finder. If you are doing this from a CD you can use ITunes for this import. I changed the import settings in ITunes so that it imported ripped CDs as mp3 files. ITunes will save the CD in a folder in the ITunes Media library which you can find in Finder under Music and then ITunes. What you next do is open VLC. Select file open with command O and navigate to the folder in which you have the mp3 files stored. Make sure you select the folder and not the individual mp3 file. VLC will start to play all the files in the folder.. If you want to create a playlist file first of all press cmd P to pause playing so you can hear Voiceover. Now press command shift + to automatically add all the files in the folder to a playlist. Now press command S to save this playlist. You can give this a name and select where you want to save the playlist. I tend to put in the same folder as the mp3 files.
You can then simply play this playlist in finder. What I did was associate both mp3 files and playlist files with VLC. I now have a very sleek and powerful media tool on my Mac. As a little refinement I have set a couple of hot spots in VLC so that I can instantly get the track title announced and time played. As I say I am a newbie to the Mac but am extremely relieved to find VLC which is so simple to use. I suppose I may get used to ITunes one day but find it very difficult as I did not use it on the Windows side. I seem to be constantly interacting and uninteractin g. If anybody knows a good guide for use with Voiceover then please let me know. Regards David Griffith 6 Oct 2011, at 15:08, Sarah May wrote: > > Hi Martin, > > I need an idiot’s guide as well.
