And even in that case, all you need do is use CCC to make a bootable backup of your current HD volume to a USB drive, (make sure that the drive you choose can actually boot a Mac because there are some which cannot), and then, go right ahead and install Lion. Should you need to use an app which is not Lion compatible, just restart off the USB volume.
I myself will upgrade after the third and can make sure I get that which I'm expecting. Just one small point. When I purchase Lion, at what point do I quit the installation so I can copy the disk image over to a spot where I can retreve it later for burning to a DVD?
