Cheree Heppe here: Where are the privacy concerns in this app's development strategy? For my money, blind people who must read printed documents would do as well to obtain volunteer strangers off the street, because that is how private DocuScan's document reading would be by comparison.
In most cases, expensive blindness specific devices and software are not purchased directly by blind consumers because of severe economic suppression of this group. Expensive, new, software and specialized devices trickle down to individual blind consumers through funding by services for the blind or by private or service club expenditures. Others obtain what they require on the resale market. This is at best, slow for the blind consumer and, at its usual outcome, the blind consumer is denied the requested funding assistance. But, for the blindness equipment and software developer, leveraging federal and state funds like they do is kinda like having your very own expense account, as development goes. Don't believe me, just look at Freedom Scientific. To say that the DocuScan Plus app's price isn't that bad in comparison to the bloated pricing of most blindness directed product development would be like saying that the tortures done in the name of the two inquisitions and the Crusades were bad, but our current practice of water boarding prisoners in secret, etc isn't really that bad, by comparison. Why should we have to settle for over priced products that risk our privacy and do half as much, just because we are blind and desperately need a way to read, store and work on the contents of printed documents? I'm talking basic access to reading mail privately and in a timely manner and not even mentioning document processing for competitive and office use. Why not contact those app developers who are keeping costs down and are doing a pretty good job with functionality, and offer them suggestions, ways to make their app fit the actual needs of blind consumers? The very presence of universal accessibility on the Apple platform shouts that we don't have to settle for the usual expense account driven, half done is good enough, oops, we'll fix it later, standard for blindness related equipment and software. If I was unsure about buying the DocuScan Plus app before because of its price, the privacy issue hammered the nail into the coffin.
