Hello Christine, I've never seen the problems you're encountering with TextEdit in the six years or so that I've been using it. I just tried showing properties in an RTF document, but it didn't produce the kind of thing you're seeing.
As for where you are in relation to what VO has just said, it all depends in which direction you're moving. When you move the VO cursor from left to right, the insertion point is to the right of the word or character you've just read, and when it moves from right to left, it's at the left. Very logical when you think about it. As for opening a file from a spotlight search, that shouldn't make any difference. To turn cursor tracking on and off, press VO-Shift-F3.
