Check out the readynas. WOrks well, can hold up to 4 disks and is easy to set up.
I use an old Network Appliance filer but that's way to much overkill for home use. I just happened to have one from an old project. You could also get an old PC, install linux and simply set up NFS / SAMBA. Few ideas, hope that helps.
