I use mostly Text Edit, and occasionally Pages.  But I heard of one called Bean 
awhile ago and just haven't looked further into it.  It's free and open 
sourced.  

Just googled it and came up with    http://www.bean-osx.com/Bean.html  It might 
be interesting to look more into this one.
