There are two and actually 3 programs in this thread:
The first is a scanning device known as the eye-pal, which works in 
conjunctionn with a pc or Mac to easily scan and read printed material. The 
issue with that is the software to make it work on a Mac appears to require an 
additional $150.
The second program is one that does both scanning and OCR.  It's name is 
Vuescan, and it costs around $40.  Drawbacks are that it worked  well in trial 
but not so once I downloaded the updates.  Also, It doesn't address 
orientation.  So, you might have difficulty if you don't know which way a page 
is supposed to be oriented.  

finally, the third program being discussed isAbbyy which apparently has the 
best OCR, but has to be fed an image from either vuescan, or  iPhoto.
The printer mentioned apparently works with Abbyy.
