I had the same issue with Skype not connecting and solved it by reinstalling the Skype software. I deleted /Applications/Skype.app ~/Library/Application Support/Skype ~/Library/Preferences/com.skype.skype.plist and then reinstalled the Skype application. It then connected on the first try.
