Hi and welcome,
The mac things I can help with.
The date and time. go to voice over utility, vo-f8 and arrow down to
commanders. VO right and select keyboard commander with VO -space. then VO
right and check the check box to use keyboard commander and ensure by vo-right
that use right option key is selected.
Now hit right option key and T and this will announce date and time. This will
only work if you are using snow leopard by the way.
For messaging, if you are using protocols other than gmail or AIM, then you
might want to opt for Adium. This is a multi-chat client and is free and works
very well with voice over.
The email situation is one I've heard of a lot on this list. The only thing I
can think is your windows mailing client is downloading all of your emails from
the server as iMap deletes in the client but keeps the messages on the server
as back up.

As for passwords, you should have an administrator's password but if you
acquired the machine and you are uncertain of what that password might be, you
might want to, if you can find it out as it is crucial for updating your mac. I
know a few others would advise making a separate account from the admin one for
your personal use and to do this you would go to system preferences, select
accounts, and create new account and select all the appropriate fields. But I
strongly would suggest you know the admin password first.
I hope this helps you a little.
