Hi,

If you have a trackpad and it is on, she might have accidentally double-tapped 
the trackpad with three fingers. This will cause VoiceOver to mute in any case, 
and also keep this setting on. This is technically the only logical way this 
would happen. Of course, speech could also be turned off and not all of 
VoiceOver's features, such as the VoiceOver sounds. This would have to be done 
from a dialog box unless you have commands assigned to the trackpad commander 
to do this. If this is not the case, however, go into VoiceOver Utility by 
hitting VO-F8. Move down to the "Speech" category, VO-right to the "Mute 
Speech" checkbox and hit VO-Space to uncheck. When you are on the table, which 
is your default location when entering the VoiceOver Utility, simply hit S 
once, then VO-right three times to find the checkbox.
