AMD runs hot anyway and it would seriously decrease the quality also
lifespan of apple computers. I've had AMD machines before and never ver
liked them because of that fact. I could litterally burn myself on the first
laptop I had back in 06 and also the Compaq I had which also ran extremely
hot. I would hope for this reason alone that apple will not switch along
with all the other finnancial reasons mentioned here. AMD is also kind of
expensive anyway or it used to be. I haven't been in the market to build a
machine of mine for some time now so I really wouldn't know.

Subject: Re: Apple to go with AMD next?
This is purely speculation on my part. As I'm sure it is on yours and
others.
Remember, it's all about profit margin. Apple has no reason to switch
to AMD if their profit margin is lower or the same.
Perhaps Apple will consider AMD if they believe their profit margin
will be higher than continuing with Intel.
On the other hand, if Apple produces their own chips, the profit
margin will be even higher. Apple will be able to control the prices
more than before.
What's the profit margin at the moment for a 16GB iPad using Apple's
own processor?
And do you think the profit margin is the same if the iPad uses an
Intel Atom processor?
Keeping in mind how much Apple likes to guard its products and
maintain a level of secrecy. Apple can do that even more if they don't
have to depend on another company for processors.
Just speculating!

Shen, the cpu in the iPad has very little to do with apple choosing to
switch to amd.
The cpu in question is probably the product of a company that apple
purchased a few years ago that makes high quality low power mobile
processors. The reason why the info on the cpu is so vague is because
apple don't want any other company to be able to use it.
Just because a company is good at making mobile processors it doesn't
mean that there good at making more standard ones.

The article is heavy on speculation and light on specs. I'm sure Apple
is comparing roadmaps and price points to see if AMD has something
better to offer. Switching to AMD would be a non-trivial change and they
aren't going to do it unless AMD has something substantially better.
Can't hurt to hear their pitch but I wouldn't be jumping to any
conclusions.
