Hi, You can use Image Capture, which will already be in your Applications folder. The scan will be saved as a .jpg file. Open the file in preview and press Control + Option + Shift L and you should hear the text being read.
Also, you might be able to get free OCR software for your scanner from the App Store. I’m using an HP laser printer/scanner and have two apps installed. The HP application includes the software essential to run the scanner and printer. The HP Easy Scan application is used for OCR, saving images, etc. Don’t know what software is available for other brands.
