You can technically run Protools on a Mini, just like you can run it on an iMac. However, that doesn't mean that you'd want to. Most all DAW systems, Protools included, need two hard drives (one for system software, applications, and plug ins, and a second for audio data), for best performance. The mini has one hard drive, and that is a 5400 RPM drive, which will have poor seek time. You have a Firewire port, that can be used to add a second hard drive, but your audio interface will probably be Firewire, and sharing the same port with your second hard drive will dramatically affect performance. You wouldn't want to use a USB external hard drive, as USB doesn't support DMA, and so would drain processor performance while it is streaming data.
So, running Protools on a Mini would be like running it on a laptop. It sort of works, and you could use it for some tracking and recording tasks, but performance is not going to be anything like it would be on a Mac Pro. After all. you can't run protools on an i[ad. you can on a mini though. A mini could be used for studio work if you cannot afford an imac.
