You did not specify on which device you are experiencing this issue, but since
you say you are a programer, I will assume you are using a Mac.

To stop VoiceOver from speaking some characters in a different language, try
the following:

1. Open VoiceOver Utility, and select Speech from the categories list table.
2. Select the Voices tab.
3. Navigate to the item labeled, "Detect Languages”, and make sure this item
is unchecked.

HTH.

I’ve noticed this recently. Sometimes when VoiceOver reads a special character,
it’ll use the name of that character from another language. It doesn’t switch
voices or anything, just calls it something completely different. For example,
I was just reading something and it called a slash a “salitus” (not sure of the
spelling). Assuming that’s from another language though I’m not sure which one.

How do I disable this? It’s incredibly annoying. I’m a programmer and use these
sorts of characters every day.

Thanks,
Brandon
