Everything worked out fine. I logged into recovery mode with command R at boot up, then I use disc utility to delete the Macintosh HD data volumes. Then I ran into a problem erasing and reformatting the main Macintosh HD system drive, but looking up online I saw that all I need to do is reboot and recon continue and it worked out fine. It was hanging up on a process that wouldn’t allow me to dismount the system drive. Finally from the recovery screen I simply reinstalled Catalina and when it came up to the set up window I simply canceled out of set up so that it will come up the next time for the new owner and he’ll be able to set it up on his own.
