If you’re upgrading from an Intel-based Mac, presumably your best option would be to install all of the software new instead of restoring from backup, due to the different CPU architectures. If your previous device uses Apple Silicon, then I assume this doesn’t matter.

Migration Assistant isn’t a hundred percent of what it could be, but it’s not useless either. The only other thing to be aware of is that if you use virtualisation to run macOS guests, currently the M4 hardware can’t run any OS earlier than Sequoia.
