But in short, back it all up, deregister/deactivate software, sign out, update system software, erase. The complexity of these steps depends on which operating system you have, but 2020 puts you in a good place. You should be able to use the Erase All Contents and Settings feature, which is pretty much bulletproof. Just make sure the OS is up-to-date before you start, for maximum marketability. Backups are important. Either copy data manually or use Time Machine. The latter covers pretty much everything, in case you forgot something. Remember that it’s not just visible stuff you want, but possibly things stored elsewhere in the filesystem; for instance, ~/Library/Mail contains any local mailboxes you might want, if you’re not using IMAP or Exchange. You can always destroy your Time Machine backup once you’re satisfied that you have everything. And remember too that Migration Assistant can use that backup, or your existing Mac, for restoration, which might make your life easier.
