Hi Mary thank you for your insight.

One of the drawbacks I have noticed with auto detection of languages is that languages

Well, I don’t have a Mac so I have no comments about that at all. As far as the phone or the iPad, how it worked in the past before iOS 18:

Add all the languages you want to your language rotor, having downloaded the appropriate voices of course. I have two US English voices, Alex which is my default setting. That is to say, if I flip through the language rotor, where I have several voices in different languages, Alex says “default“. If that voice has focus as I’m looking on a webpage for instance, and I run across Russian, voice automatically switches to my Russian voice no problem.

If I am sent to another English voice, not my default Alex, but another one that’s in the rotor, when I run across Russian, nothing changes. So at least in my experience, you have to have the default as your language that you’re reading in in order to get a voice switch. I hope that helps. It’s also worth remembering that Russian is in a different alphabet. Whether that matters I don’t know.

Hi all,

Based on her last message, Mary has gotten this to work. I never have. I’ve had detect languages turned on forever on my Mac, and my phone, but VO has never once automatically changed the voice. How have you gotten this to work?
TIA,
Donna

Only switch on those areas which have the Lang attribute on web pages. However in context where this is not present a language simply won't switch which is a drawback on iOS. On Android, when using apps such as AutoTTS, language switching happens on its own, irrespective whether or not it is a web page or document.
