You could still run a virtual machine, I suppose, as discussed on this list in recent weeks.

Having a second physical machine would probably be easier, though.

As a matter of personal policy, I always try to have two working desktop or laptop systems, so that I can depend on one of them if the other fails. I've had negative experiences with hardware issues, which can take weeks to resolve in some cases. I've been following this strategy successfully since the early 90s.
