Brad, Those items are not in the textedit view menu. For the open dialog, I did find after pressing command-O in textedit that there is a menu button labeled: "Change the item grouping (hold down Option to change the sort)" next to the "list" menu button. If you VO-Space on button, the first option is "none" which should is probably what is wanted.
