Debra, For what it's worth, VoiceOver occasionally gets into a finicky mode and getting to the Status menus doesn't work properly. It's difficult to say what causes this behavior but restarting VoiceOver always seems to remedy the situation. There are alternate keyboard shortcuts for getting to the menu bar and status menus. I don't recall offhand what they are but they might help as well. Perhaps someone else might recall the OS X shortcuts for these menus. Anyway, try restarting VoiceOver to fix the status menu issue when it comes up.
