A warning that the Mac will shut down in 60 seconds, and then these seconds counting down, is standard behavior when selecting Shut Down, from the Apple Menu. Not sure why there was a hang-up and the Mac did not proceed with the shut down.
Perhaps there was a ongoing process that prevented the shut down, as Tim mentions, though in my experience these processes tend to resume themselves once the Mac is rebooted. Seems that Lori said the hissing sound was coming from her speakers. She didn’t specify if her speakers were plugged into the headphone jack on the back of the Mac mini, or if she was using the mini’s internal speaker. - Brad - On May 31, 2021, at 09:51, 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries <macvisionaries@googlegroups.com> wrote: Hi, I’m wondering if the hissing sound was the cooling fans for the Mini. There may have been some process happening in the background, such as an update, that had caused the machine to work hard and require cooling. With the Mini saying that it would shutdown in 43 seconds, this also makes it sound like something was happening that it wanted to finish before shutting down. As usual, Brad’s suggestions are on the money. If the machine does need time to do something, allow it to do so, then shut itself down. If the 43 seconds drags on to minutes, then there is something problematic going on that a forced shutdown may remedy.
