Hi Donna,

On a Mac, when opening a Google Sheet, wait for it to totally load. Once
loaded, do not use VO keys, and just use your up/down/right/left arrows to
navigate withinin the sheet. After loading, your cursor is normally place in
cell A1, and depending on your VO settings, the contents of each cell should be
announced as you arrow through the various cells. When you get to the one you
wish to edit, just type in your data then press an arrow key, the tab key, or
return. Continue moving around in this fashion to look at other cells. This
basic navigation and more is accomplished well in Safari or Chrome. You can
use the Item Chooser as well to find things such as the various menus and such.
One that I use often is VO-i then type the word “file”, VO-space to open the
File menu, press “d” to get to Download then return to download a version of
the file in Excel. this is just for faster viewing purposes as you’ll need to
do all editing in the actual Google Sheet. Once the sheet is downloaded, you
can use either Excel or Numbers to review it quicker just so you have a good
understanding of the layout etc. Safari is usable in most cases, but Chrome
works better in Chrome apps. Some of the elements such as certain pop-up menus
and such are more responsive in Chrome than in Safari. I use a lot of tab key
navigation and a fair amount of arrow navigation without VO keys. You end up
having to use a lot of the tricks in your basket as these Googly apps are
usable, but certainly not designed with accessibility in mind. You may also
wish to add the ChromeVox extension to Chrome as it works well within the
Google environment. The drawback with ChromeVox is that it’s another group of
keyboard navigation commands to learn and it can sometimes be slower than VO
navigation as it works through the ChromeOS platform as opposed to the built-in
MacOS.

Later…

What I need to do is fairly straight forward. It's a spreadsheet that tracks
troubleshooting issues. So I need to be able to do two things:
1. Enter text into a cell
2. Check the status of the report I or a coworker entered.

The latter seems to work fine, both on Mac and Windows. But entering text in
the cells seems more problematic. I did finally get the Mac to let me enter
text, but I'm not sure why it worked, so don't know if I can reproduce it. lol
Just thought maybe there was some command, or mode or other trick that I needed
to invoke.

Oh, and when you say enable braille support, are you referring to Cmd-Option-Z?
That's the command I see for enabling screen-reader support, but I never get
braille.

Oh, and while I'm on the topic, I haven't yet upgraded to Catalina, but was
thinking I might do so next week. Does that upgrade impact how one works with
GoogleSheets, either for better or for worse?

I've got till fall to figure this out, but I figured someone here has probably
worked with GoogleSheets before, so figured it was worth asking.

Thanks for the help, Jonathan.
Cheers,
Donna
