Hello, I did try using the terminal last night and still no go. The process seems to finish okay but the USB drive still does not show up in the startup disk section of system preferences. Even when I unlock it so I can make changes there is only one option and that is the hard disk. I am using the full Mac OS catalina installer. Its an 8GB file in my applications folder. I did go into recovery mode but I did not see anything that would enable me to boot from a USB drive. I think that might be a thing you can do with Macs that have the T2 chips only.
