I've had my Mad to sync with my Google contacts ever I since got my first (and so far only) Mac. That's probably because I already had Android phones and was already set up on Google.
If I were starting from scratch today, I'd likely reconsider who I trusted with my data. I rather like Apple's commitment that says: "What happens on Apple stays on Apple." I don't see myself getting an Iphone anytime, but I might seriously consider switching cloud services for privacy reasons--unless, of course, the industry started paying me for selling all my data, something I don't expect in my lifetime. So, could I switch? I don't know. Is there Icloud for Android? It would be a hassle, but maybe a worthwhile hassle. But, if I had nothing, well that's not so difficult a choice, imo.
