Hi Simon,
Actually, since other voices do not have this problem, I wonder why that
would be unique to Alex?
Kevin has asked a different question.
Can someone tell me how Alex can be downloaded in case it has been
damaged somehow?
Again he is using macos on a mac mini.

Kevin,
Long shot but have you by any chance tapped the touch pad three twice quickly
with three fingers?
This is a mute for the voiceover voice.
I don't think it's an yissue for you but worth asking.

Simon,
Kevin's answer is below.
Subject: Re: OT: Why does Alex cut out after 15 minutes
Okay. I have now switched from Ava to Alexand will see how long it takes for
Alex to stop speaking. At that point, I’ll try turning VO off and then back on
with CMD F5.
Actually, Alex just stopped as I’m typing this. I will now turn VO OFF.
I know that VO is off now because if I press the VO keys with the left or right
arrow, I get a beep. I will now turn VO ON.
I turned VO ON and Alex did not speak. I pressed VO CMD Right Arrow and the
rate dialog appeared at 55%. I have enough vision to see this. Alex did not
speak.
When I pressed VO CMD Left Arrow to return to the voices, no dialog appeared
and I started hearing the beep that suggested VO was turned OFF. I don’t know
now whether VO is ON or OFF. Alex does not speak. There is no VO rectangle
that I can see. I have some vision. The only thing I can do is to reboot the
computer and hope that speech will return.
I have no reason to believe that Alex is not downloaded. It worked on this
computer for years. But hasn’t worked in years. I’m working without speech as
I type this portion of the response. I’m using my limited vision and my memory
to keep my place in the document.
Other than CMD F5, what is the other long way of turning VO ON or OFF?
Thanks so much,
Kevin

Kevin,
What happens if you do a command f5? That is the keystroke to turn voiceover
on and off. Does Alex return then?
first question from the mac list.

Thanks. I’m sorry that I confused the subject of one message with the body of
another that had been bounced as undeliverable. Hope someone can tell me why
Alex cuts out after 15 or so minutes. It’s been doing it ever since El Cap. I
have Sierra on a 2010 Mac mini now.

This is something that’s bugged me for years. I have a Mid 2010 Mac mini which
is my admin computer. It is not my music machine with the exception of having
my iTunes library on it. It is running 10.12.6. I’m wondering why the Alex VO
voice stops running after 15 minutes or so. You have to restart the machine to
get VO to work again. This doesn’t happen with any other voice. Ideas?
