Did you ever try opening new finder windows as tabs instead? Then
using command-tab to cycle through the tabs? Works splendidly in list
view. I find this makes copying or moving files quite painless. When I
want to close a tab, command-w does it.

I use list mode. I get confused if I try to use collumn mode. I guess I could
use some practice with that.
I've never tried command-o to open a folder. I use that for programs or apps. I
assume that when I open a folder it opens in the same window I'm in. that may
not be what's happening because if I had 2 windows open so I could easily copy
files, every folder I had passed through in order to reach my destination would
be open. I would hit them all when I was cycling. I was trying to find a way to
avoid that and I think I have.

Hello,
the standard behavior for Macintosh since before MacOS * was created has been
to open a new folder in the same window as the current window. I tried
1. using command-o
2. using command-down
3. command-option-O
The first two of these in column, list and icon modes seemed to just replace
the new folder with in the same window with the same configuration.
The second option VoiceOver speaks as Open and close old window or something
like that.
My memory is poking at me and saying that Tinkertool had an option to make the
finder open folders in a new window, but I don’t have that tool to play with on
my current system.
So, before using command-down to open your folders what keystroke / mouse
action were you using to open windows? Also, what is your default viewing
style. I still prefer “column” mode except when I need to get more information
about a item without getting all the details in command-i. Column mode will
navigate into and out of folders with left and right keys and will navigate
within a folder with the arrow keys. I believe that column mode is always
sorted by name, but could be mistaken.

it's kind of hard to explain. when I want to cycle through windows I use
command-tilde. when I want to open folders as I'm navigating to my desired
destination, that's when I use command-option-down arrow for open and
command-option-uparrow for close. I'm in list mode. I'll have one window
already open in say, downloads. then I'll cycle to another window say in my
external hard drive. once I'm in there I need to navigate to the folder where
I'm going to copy or paste a file from downloads. sometimes I have to go 2 or 3
deep to get to the desired folder. then as I would cycle back through the
windows heading for downloads, I would hit every window I had to open to get to
the desired folder. I wanted to find a way of reducing the number of windows I
had to cycle through. if I remember to use command-option-down arrow as I'm
navigating, that seems to do the trick.

Hello Lorie and thank you for this info.
However, I am not certain that I understand the scenario to which you are
referring.
For example, when I need to copy and paste files between finder windows, I use
Command+~.
I don't think I've ever used Command+UpArrow.
Can you please describe why and how this scenario plays out in a sequence of
steps?
Thank you,
Mark

Subject: cycling through windows in finder
I figured out something I want to tell you all about in case anybody's
interested. I had been asking about how to have most or all of the windows
closed except for the 2 that I wanted to copy and paste between. I used to be
able to do this but now all the windows I was navigating through to get to my
destination had become part of the cycle. somebody here mentioned opening and
closing windows using command-down and up arrows. I had been doing this without
the option and including it in the command has cleared up the problem for me.
it kind of closes the door or window behind me.
