Hi, Whether it's on an external drive or not makes no difference at all. The Time Machine backup is the backup wherever it resides. Regarding your other question, you can delete an instance of a pdf from your backups, but deleting one file isn't really going to make a difference for saving space. What I was making sure that you weren't planning on doing was editing the file itself. Do not make changes to the contents of a file within the backup. If you do wish to delete a file, you should be within the Time Machine interface, not accessing the backup from within the Finder. When you make modifications within the backup bundle from the Finder, you can corrupt your backup and make it unusable. You need to "Enter" Time Machine from the Time Machine Extras menu when making modifications to the backup. I hope that makes some sort of sense to you.
