Hello,
This is an old post that started with Shaun's request for an
application to append text to the clipboard. I suggested that he
explore the SimpleNote iPhone application with its Desktop counterpart
of JustNotes, since I knew he had an iPhone. The idea was to use the
JustNotes interface as a general replacement for clipboard functions.
Yvonne weighed in with a solution that involved using Automator in
Snow Leopard, but she also referred to the advantages of using
Notational Velocity for notes (in place of JustNotes).
Well, the latest (January 30) release of Notational Velocity now
supports syncing with the Simplenote app on the iPhone/iPod Touch, for
fairly seamless access to notes on both your Mac desktop and on your
mobile device through automatic sync. The Simplenote app by Codality
became free about two weeks ago (previously was $1.99). The JustNotes
beta also upgraded functions and hot key definitions in that time
period, but what makes the Notational Velocity program particularly
nice for VoiceOver users is that, apart from it's great interace and
the fact that you don't need to access the app from the status bar
(even though this de facto isn't a problem with JustNotes), if you are
also using a program like Dropbox to share notes cross-platform you no
longer have to contend with which "untitled" window you're navigating
to in Finder with the window chooser menu (VO-F2 twice) -- the one for
JustNotes or the one for Dropbox.
To find out more about the free Notational Velocity or to download the
current version, check the web site:

Use item chooser menu to select the download link. To read more
about the Simplenote integration with Notational Velocity, check out
this article at "Smoking Apples" titled "Notational Velocity now syncs
with Simplenote" by Milind Alvares, January 31, 2010:

I'm just adding this to my earlier post today about using SimpleNote
as a (mobile) note-taking solution.
Cheers,
Esther

An alternative to justnotes for something like this could be a free
app called notational velocity. That's another app where you don't
have to worry about saving and closing windows and such, and has the
added advantage of a hotkey to jump to it.
copy, hotkey, copy, hotkey, go to where you want to paste it,
hotkey, select all, paste. Something like that, anyway.
Another alternative *might* and this is off the top of my head,
*might* be a service in os x. If you could write an applescript to
append to the frontmost document in textedit, you could possibly
highlight the text, hit a hotkey, and provided you had an open
document in textedit, send it there. Again, not ideal, but something
to build on. In fact, I remember I wrote a script once that appended
text to a text file in a certain directory with the name of the file
being the date. In other words, you could keep a daily log of text
clippings. It was triggered with Quicksilver back then, admittedly,
but with OSX's services feature, I'm pretty sure you could duplicate
it. You'd have to open the file to get at the text you'd clipped,
but it could be done. Probably even automated with another hotkey,
if the filename was consistent enough.
Hmm, I might actually have to write that. Bad idea, getting a
programmer to think outloud in email like this, <grin>. Sorry this
ended up a bit offtopic, but I'll post it anyway. It might give you,
or others, some ideas, if I don't write the script myself first.
One of the reasons I haven't mided a break from Quicksilver is that,
thanks to Snow Leopard, there's a huge amount that can be done with
services alone.
