Hi,

I did understand your question, which is why I started out by saying that QuickSilver can support this feature (specifically for clipboard use, either through using its clipboard history or more directly through a plug in), but that this program isn't currently an option for the reasons Yvonne detailed about the difficulty of installing for Snow Leopard with VoiceOver.

What I was suggesting is that you use the JustNotes window on your Mac effectively in place of the clipboard. You don't have to worry about opening/closing or saving and quitting the way your would if you pasted into a TextEdit window, for instance. Best solution I could come up with, because I think that a lot of the clipboard managing programs aren't accessible. There's been a more extensive discussion of Simplenote and JustNotes on the mac-access list recently in connection with note usage. I take it you aren't subscribed there currently? I'll note that Simplenote and TextExpander each have one unlabeled button that I've found -- in both cases this is the one announced as "button" in the lower left corner of the screeen. In the case of TextExpander, this is the "Settings" button. In the case of Simplenote, on the screen with the full view of your note, this is the button to send the note as a mail message.

Most clipboard apps are inaccessible because they run with icons in the status menu bar that VoiceOver can't navigate to. While that's not guaranteed to make the application inaccessible on your Mac, and you can sometimes AppleScript shortcuts to get to the functions, the apps generally don't provide this -- especially if they're aimed at fancier copies and pastes of images. Although JustNotes does use the status menu bar, you can just get to the window by using Window chooser menu under the finder window to look for "untitled" or switch windows.

Sorry not to have a better solution. I was just trying to find the best solution within the known limitations.

Cheers,

Esther

OK, I don't think my question is understood. I have Simple Notes and Text Expander on my phone and computer and understand there uses. What I want is the ability to copy some text to the clipboard on one area of the screen and move somewhere else and add to the previously copied text, then I want to paste it. Example: I copied your name from a mail message and your birthday from address book. Right now if your name was copied and then I copied your birthday the name would no longer be on the clipboard hinge the append to clipboard feature. I want to be able to copy from more than one place and just keep adding to the copied text and be able to paste all copied items at once.

Listers often times I find myself needing to append text to the clipboard and would really benefit from this feature. Does anyone know of a way to do it on the Mac or do you know of a third party who has developed such application?

QuickSilver, the application that Yvonne described in her blog at:
http://yvonnezed.posterous.com/
supports this capability, but as I believe she mentioned in her posts, you may not be able to get all of this working in Snow Leopard. What I've been using instead of the clipboard with some of the same functionality that you want is a free software application called JustNotes (in its beta release) that synchronizes notes with an iPhone/iPod Touch app called Simplenote ($1.99). This also automatically puts the notes up on my iPod Touch within the Simplenote app, and lets me access current, updated versions of the notes through the free Simplenote secure web interface. This is also a great way of getting content up to my iPod Touch (if I want to cut and paste in any of the text I loaded up as notes). (As an aside, the Simplenote app also lets me use another iPhone app called TextExpander (normally $4.99, but currently $1.99). This app lets me customize "snippets" that minimize my typing, and that can automatically expand to the currently formatted date, etc.).

You can read more about Simplenote and JustNotes in this TUAW article about Simplenote that gives links to these and other apps:

("Elegant simplicity: the power of SimpleNote for iPhone" by Steven Sande, Dec 21st 2009)

Note: I installed JustNotes because I already had Simplenote. If you install JustNotes first and later decide to get Simplenote I'm not sure whether the automatic synchronization will work correctly without some fiddling. Simplenote gives you free access to a Simplenote secure web account that lets you sync notes in the web account immediately with your notes on the iPhone/iPod Touch. JustNotes has you enter this when your set it up, since the application for the Mac desktop was inspired by the way that Simplenote works with the web account. The small, floating JustNotes window currently shows up in the window chooser menu for Finder (VO-F2 twice) as "untitled". If you're using DropBox, this means that you might see two windows labelled "untitled".
