hi thanks but that is the problem that tab is dim so i cant do it so am
i right in thinking i have to get to disc utility after doing command r
and not in system prefs

tab you need as there is no dedicated format tab available. So you press the
erase tab and you will have to erase your chosen disc again and only then will
