Hi Donna,

Really its up to the individual.

For me, not really,

But guess it might change when updates come out in third quarter

Most of what I heard about isn’t really stuff we will benefit from down under,
You in the USA will,
Especially TV OS
You can still watch the recorded keynote on line or through you’re a TV

Subject: WWDC?

Hi all,

I wasn't able to catch the WWDC keynote. Did they announce anything
interesting?
Cheers,
Donna

Hi all. I'd like to share with you an article I wrote earlier this evening for
my radio show called Accessibility Matters. For those of you that don't know
what it is, Accessibility Matters is a radio show I created that talks about
Accessibility and its issues in the community. But sometimes on the show we
talk about fun things like assistive technology and accessible apps. The show
can be heard Thursdays at 11:00 AM central on 95.9 CKUW's website
ckuw.ca<http://ckuw.ca/>. Alternatively I host a Whatsapp group for the show
and every week I post episodes there. If you want to join it, email me
privately and I'll send you the invite link. This article can be read as well
on our Facebook page at
facebook.com/accessibilitymattersradio<http://facebook.com/accessibilitymattersradio>.
I welcome any comments you may have. So without further ado, here is the
article.

WWDC 2018: Hopes and Predictions

It's the biggest 4 letters of the year. WWDC starts Monday and we at
Accessibility Matters are excited for the big day. Well, I don't know about
Melissa, but I sure as heck am. Here are some predictions we, I mean I am
looking forward to seeing.

Hopes

1. Implementation Of The Siri Voices System Wide On macOS

Since iOS 9, Apple has made it possible to use the Siri voices for Voiceover
and other system wide features that use speech. In 2016, Apple introduced macOS
Sierra which brought the virtual assistant into the Macintosh environment.
However, access to the voices system wide wasn't possible which is the case
today. We on the Mac don't get the voices that PC users do such as Neospeech,
Ivona, or the now debunked Innoetics. For 3rd party TTS providers, we only get
Nuance, Acapela, Cereproc or Cepstral which I don't recommend anyone try unless
they want to crash their computer. So on Monday, I hope we can finally use the
Siri voices system wide. I'd love to use the new female voice on my Mac. I
sometimes take a break from her but I always gravitate back to her because she
is the most natural sounding female voice on the iPhone. A lot of blind people
like voices if they're responsive and while that's important to me as well, I
like my voices as human sounding as they can be. So Apple, make it happen. If
Windows 10 allows Jaws users to use the Cortana voice whose name is Eva, then
let us use the Siri voices on the Mac.

2. If Siri Voices Still Can't Be Used, Give Us More Voices

If we still can't use the Siri voices system wide, then I hope the new voices
that Nuance introduced two years ago will finally make their debut on Apple
devices. Two years ago, Nuance introduced 5 new voices: Evelyn, Nathan and Zoe
who are US voices, Malcom who is a British voice, and Rishi, an Indian English
voice. These voices with the exception of Evelyn can be used with both NVDA and
Jaws. You can download them for free with Jaws 17 and up, but you have to pay
for them with NVDA. And if these voices come to the Mac and possibly iOS, I
hope we get the natural version of Zoe that I first heard on the Nuance website
and not the version that Jaws and NVDA have. On the website, she sounded very
human, but with the version that NVDA and Jaws have now, she sounds like she's
bored and doesn't sound like she's interested. Don't bother checking the Nuance
website now though, the demo that they have of her now is the same thing the
two Windows screenreaders have.

3. No Authentication Message When Mac Display Goes To Sleep

Do you ever find it annoying when you're reading something on your Mac and when
your display goes to sleep, Voiceover interrupts the reading and says,
"Authentication, login panel, user, image, authentication has new window?"
Yeah. I find that annoying too. Especially when you're reading a long article.
Sure, there are ways around it like using the speech feature in the edit menu
or setting your screen not to go to sleep at all, but those work arounds
shouldn't be needed. Besides, wouldn't that damage your screen over time if you
had it on 24/7? I have two suggestions that could be done to eliminate this
problem. 1, have Voiceover speak the prompt after it finishes what it's reading
or 2, eliminate the message altogether. Implementing one of these changes will
hopefully save Voiceover users both frustration and unnecessary trips to the
Apple Store for repairs.

Predictions

1. Platform Wide Usage of Apps

Since Tim Cook became CEO of Apple back in August of 2011, he has said time and
time again that the iOS ecosystem will not be integrated into the Macintosh
ecosystem and vice versa. However, with the rumors and articles that I've been
reading, Apple might be changing their stance. If the rumors end up being true,
I predict that macOS 10.14 which we don't know what it will be called and iOS
12 will have the ability to run apps from these operating systems. So for
example, If you had macOS 10.14 installed and you wanted to play an iOS game
like Dice World on your Mac, you'd just install that app on your computer and
there you go. I'd for sure welcome that feature. I have video games on my phone
and I'd love the ability to play those games on a bigger screen. Plus I think
it would open up more opportunities for developers. The only thing I would hope
that doesn't happen is that apps already on the Mac such as RS Games stop
working. I don't have the money to give to Marty Schultz so I can keep playing
my beloved RS Games.

2. New iPads, Macs, And The New iPhone SE

According to Mac Rumors, alongside the announcements for the new OS's, we could
see new iPads, Macs, and even the new 2nd generation iPhone SE. I'll be
particularly interested in the new iPhone SE model. I'll be looking to see if
this model uses touch ID or Face ID. My contract with Bell ends at the end of
August so this will determine which phone I'll get. If the SE2 has touch ID,
I'll get that. If Face ID, I'll stick to my original plan of getting the 8 Plus.

Note: These predictions are just rumors I've been hearing these past months.
They may not happen.

The big event starts Monday at 12:00 CT. You can watch it on any Mac running
Sierra or above, any iPhone running iOS 10 and above, or on the Apple TV. For
Windows, make sure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer or
Microsoft Edge installed. You can watch it with the link below. I know we will
be. I even have the snacks for this long exciting event. And if you have
anything you'd like to see added, put it in the comments below. And stay tuned
this fall because we will have reviews of all the operating systems on the Show.
