The format that it converts to on my system is m4a and not and.
Whetehr there is an option to use this format  rather than m4a I am not sure.
Not every song will be matched but if they are not matched then the version you 
have localley is uploaded into the Match cloud for you to download on other 
devices.
The other thing is that you need to pay attention to Tags. Match will not 
recognise untagged music and like iTunes will simply regard it as unknown even 
if there is an informative file title.
This means that material like audio book files will not be recognised unless 
they are tagged appropriately which is not always the case.

Yes, Mary, there are cds which iTunes Match will not upload.  One category I 
found was BBC comedy shows such as Hancock’s Half Hour, despite being 
legitimate purchases. The only solution was sometimes to edit the “Get info” 
details to reclassify them as audiobooks or podcasts.
