The information about the firmware is in gengal, about. The air pods must be in 
one's ears for the air pods button to show up, it is after all the information 
about the connected IPhone.

The case needs to be open and the airpods need to be connected to the iPhone. 
However, it is not necessary to actually have an airpod in one's ear.

Go to settings, general, about, and one will find an airpods button near the 
bottom of the screen. Double-tap on this and the desired information screen 
will appear.
