Hi David, Yeah the earpods screen comes up when you open the case But even then I'm only getting the charge level for the case and each pod no other info is showing at least not that I've yet found.

However, it is not necessary to actually have an airpod in one's ear. Go to settings, general, about, and one will find an airpods button near the bottom of the screen.
