Hi,

The age of which young people are allowed to work varies all over the place
with numerous rationales for why the specific age is chosen. Sixteen is
actually one of the later ages where young people can start working. In fact,
many locales allow 14 and our province even allows 13 year olds to work in
certain venues such as fast food joints. Normally, there are regulations put
forward to safeguard these young workers such as limited hours, not allowed to
be left on their own to close or open up shop, not to work past 10:00 pm on a
week night etc. Sorry, a bit off topic with respect to Apple products, but
just felt like enlightening anyone who thought that 16 was too young to have a
part-time job.

Subject: Re: movie audio description app

I actually got free passes to my local theater, as they insisted that the
movie, "Sully" was not audio described. I later found out it was actually so.

I'm not sexist, nor am I ageist, if that be a word, but it was a Sunday
afternoon when we went. Normally, our theater is wonderful, and there isn't
even a question of doubt when I ask them for one of the headset devices, but
that day, they took about 15 minutes just to find a headset, then the gal who
was behind the box office counter must have only been... Sheesh! I'd putter at
maybe no more, pushing it, at most, 16. I thought that was against child labour
laws to allow someone that young to work, but, I won't go there. Anyway, she
didn't have a freaking clue! The headset she gave me wasn't even charged, so I
took it back. She gave me another that was only barely charged, and it only
seemed to have the listenning assistance turned on. When I hit the button to
swap over to description, all I got was static. I went back again and told
them, and they insisted that they didn't have description for that movie, and
that nationally, regardless the theater chain, no one had it for that title.
When I finally called back, showed them the IMDB page that states it had it,
and then even had a friend who saw it described call and tell them he saw it
described, they finally confessed that the kid working the counter that day was
new, and didn't know anything about it. Frankly, taht's no excuse. She should a
been trained before being hierred. I'm sorry! They agreed, and because of it,
we now have 4 free passes, being 4 of us including myself went that day.

On a sidenote, don't see Sully if you can't get description for any reason.
It's very visual! You'll need it, trust me! If you can see it that way though,
it's one of the best movies I've ever seen!

Anyway, my point is, not to get too off topic from mac related things
continuing this thread, but I agree with Ryan. You may need to insist that the
movie is described. If they don't know what you're talking about, which they
should, but if they don't, then educate them. Most theaters have some form of
internet access. Do what I did. Don't ask them to, but insist! demand! that
they go to IMDB's website, and look the movie up. If they refuse, then either
have the movie detail page up on your phone, or have an already made printout
of the details page for the title, so you can show them first hand that it has
audio description. That way, if they say no it doesn't, you just put it back in
their face, and say, "Oh yeah? Really? Then, explain to me what this little
logo means." I've been known to not be the nicest about this with some people,
but hey. I get it done.

Chris.

Nope, but if you're visiting one of many chains that now offer audio
description, just borrow a device from their customer service desk. As an
example, where I live in San Francisco, AMC, Century, Alamo Draft House, they
all have listening devices available. My suggestion is to get there early, ask
for a device, and repeatedly insist that they make double, triple sure that
they chose audio description, video description, visually impaired, or whatever
their software suggests isn't assisted listening. Assisted listening is when
the movie's standard soundtrack is instead fed to the device. This helps
hearing impaired individuals enjoy the film. Many connect the device to a
hearing aid, or to a streamer that sends the audio to their Bluetooth hearing
aids. Clearly you just want that audio description track, so if you get into
the theater and the audio you hear in your headphones matches the house audio
playing for the trailers, go right back out and insist they chose assistive
listening, and ask them to reconfigure.

Good luck,
Ryan
