As an example, where I live in San Francisco, AMC, Century, Alamo Draft House, they all have listening devices available. My suggestion is to get there early, ask for a device, and repeatedly insist that they make double, triple sure that they chose audio description, video description, visually impaired, or whatever their software suggests isn't assisted listening. Assisted listening is when the movie's standard soundtrack is instead fed to the device. This helps hearing impaired individuals enjoy the film. Many connect the device to a hearing aid, or to a streamer that sends the audio to their Bluetooth hearing aids. Clearly you just want that audio description track, so if you get into the theater and the audio you hear in your headphones matches the house audio playing for the trailers, go right back out and insist they chose assistive listening, and ask them to reconfigure.
