Hi, I believe that Sierra is not compatible with that machine. When you start up from the CD or DVD, is the Macintosh HD visible? If so, then the HD is likely OK. There are cases when the HD is visible to Disk Utility or the installer, but the installation will fail. In those cases, the HD probably has some bad sectors and is essentially at the end of its life cycle. Whether it is or not though, I don't believe that Sierra is an option for that unit. It may have more life left in it if you install an SSD with El Capitan or Yosemite.
