I use the escape key frequently in the shortcut key sequences for the
shut down options. However the removal of the escape key does not
surprise me at all as Apple are clearly on a direction of travel. For
years now Apple has followed a strategy of transferring technologies
and techniques from their phones to Macs. This seem likely then to, as
on their phones, see the
increasing removal of all mechanical parts on Macs. To my mind the
disappearance of all the specialist keys apart from possibly the basic
Qwerty set is pretty inevitable given the travel of their thought.
Obviously speculation but I think intelligent speculation given their
record. It will be a little in the future but I believe that they would
probably want to eventually get rid of even the Qwerty keyboard,
possibly accomodating touch typists by using virtual keys in much the
same way as the home button has been recently replaced by a virtual
version on the iPhone 7.
You would have a nice pretty smooth look not spoilt by the "old
fashinoned" look of technology with keyboards. the argument will be
everybody will be dictating anyway. . I can hear the debate now.
"Old fashioned" touch typists who had an issue with this would probably
be invited to use a bluetooth keyboard in the same way as they do on
their phones.
I personally will not be buying one of these in the future when they
arrive, or if I did , I would immediately attach a proper keyboard.

Guess this is a wait and see situation.
I just want a quad core processor in my mac book air and `32gig ram with 1tb ssd
I'll be happy even with a 13 inch device and those specs.

Subject: No more hardware escape key on upcoming MacBooks
I just saw an article talking about how you can re-map and existing key, such
as control, caps lock, command or option, to take the place of the escape key
which is going away on the new MacBooks to be revealed on Thursday. There will
still be that functionality on the new magic track bar or whatever they're
calling it. But if you are a person who wants to have a hardware escape key,
you will have to remap an existing key to get it. For those of you who use caps
lock for voiceover, good luck. I have no idea how that Mike coexist with this
new functionality. Or you're stuck with the new magic track bar and it's soft
functionality. Could be interesting.
