Does that drive have an external power supply or does it get its power
from the port of the mac?
I'm asking because I read a review of a drive that also had thunderbolt
and usb 3. Because it used the power from the port the performance for
the usb 3 was superior to the thunderbolt in transfer speeds.
In any case the usb 3 has a trannsfer speed in excess of what is required
to move music in real time. So for that purpos I wouldn't hesitate to use
it.

The Late 2012 Mini has USB 3 whereas the 2011 model has USB 2. I'm thinking
that it would be worth a try to leave the video connected to your Mini and
connect the drive with the USB cable instead. If things work well, then
that should suffice.

I may have been hasty in my assessment. It looks like your Mini should
handle the drive. So, I'm wondering if the Mini is trying to index the
external drive for Spotlight purposes and the Mini is taxed a little
while
this is happening. Try plugging in the drive at night before going to
bed,
and leave it plugged in all night. Allow the Mini to do whatever it
needs
done while you're sleeping and see if it is behaving better in the
morning.
