If you pay the full retail price for an AT&T phone, I'm not sure if its unlocked?
Also even when your order on apple.com shows "preparing for shipment" you may be able to track the package before Apple updates your order with a tracking#. Go to: http://ups.com click on tracking click on the track by reference tab then in the reference number field write down either (you will have to test various combinations) either 1. The 10 digit telephone number associated with your order. This may either be your cell# or another number that you may have in your Apple contact record i.e. a home or work phone; 2. Your Apple order# starting with W but minus the last 2 characters; 3. The serial number for your new phone which you can find under your Apple profile. Then pick your country and destination zip code, leaving the date fields as they are. My package shows an origin scan in Shanghai, China as of 09/12, with still an estimated delivery of 09/16. But still no "departure scan" out of Shanghai. Also you may need a UPS My Choice account login in order to get the full tracking detail, but this is a great service to have if you get a lot of packages. There is also a Flight Aware page where you can try to track your UPS flight from China. Apparently the "departure time" you see out of Shanghai corresponds to the departure time of a UPS flight typically from Shanghai to ANC.
