Hi, I don't believe it is a toy. This of course is a subjective question. With 
my touch, I will have it download emails and I use it in my home with the wi-fi 
connection in places where I can get privacy and not disturbe the rest of the 
family. I can also hook it up to my electronic drums and play along. Sometimes 
I need quiet and moving my laptop isn't convenient. It really is a matter of 
finding the right situation to change it from a toy to a tool:).
