Sure is interesting. Had done just this same deal when Yosemite was released. I think I had created the bootable drive with 10.9.2 but 10.9.3 came out before I did an install so went thru the same process with 10.9.3 and actually installed that.

So this is perplexing. Yes I had ejected then restarted. Also did the VO f1-f1 as well as VO f2-f2.

   If I blow the screen way up I see the spinning wheel going nowhere fast.

It’s not “Busy” the whole time after you press the button, is it?  Sometimes 
dialogs appear but VO does not voice them in a timely manner.

You checked for system dialogs with VO-F1-F1?
