Indeed, the world does seem to be moving swiftly to mobile, in large part. The
times when setting up a full-fledged home Wi-Fi network are moving behind us as
people find that the convenience of doing everything with a mobile-equipped
phone or tablet over the Internet is sufficient to make it their primary means
of computer interaction. I can well imagine the time when the only uses for
computers are particularly specialised or discerning: the sharing of data over
fast wired or Wi-Fi networks, gaming, heavy streaming, or the writing of
software and the running of servers. These will continue to take the
heavyweight approach, until mobile technology catches up and the market
produces specialised devices to fill the remaining roles in a more autonomous
and convenient fashion.

I do think Apple’s efforts, including their accessibility efforts, are clearly
in line with this trend, i.e. directed at iOS rather than OS X. Having said
this, I’ve never run an iPad as my only device, so I can’t say how the
experience compares with OS X. It has certainly crossed my mind as a possible
strategy, though, and if it weren’t for my need for speed or occasional need
for a general-purpose computer for doing general-purpose things, I’d seriously
consider it. Until then, a Mac will probably continue to be necessary.
