I don't remember when we bought this Apple Airport extreme. But it was before 
any mac have the type ac connectivity on it. It wasn't too long after we bought 
it that the ac came out. I also have airport expresses for use with 
old-fashioned stereos, and they work wonderfully well with airplay.
