When upgrading from Leopard to Yosemite, I did have to erase the disk because 
of some  changes in the disk partitions. There was no warning from the 
installation until it was too late. ZI had to boot from recovery partition and 
then restore from time machine. I suggest you get Take Control of Upgrading to 
El Captain if this is your first Macintosh. Joe covers all the issues. j
