Hello, The configuration of VoiceOver is a matter of personal preference. However, I find that most people like to have verbosity set to medium and to have hints turned off. You can get the hint spoken for any situation by pressing VO-Shift-n. Set numbers to be read as words and set misspelt words to be signaled by playing a tone.
